TREE OF PLENTY

We kicked off the 24th Annual Tree of Plenty campaign on Wednesday Nov. 20 (not so) bright and early with our good friends from CTV. They joined us at the Food Bank for four live hits on their morning show, always good fun!

The Tree of Plenty Campaign is our organization’s largest fundraiser and generates about a third of our annual operating budget.  With help from generous community champions we hope to raise $400,000 AND 400,000 pounds of food to help families right here in Saskatoon.

OATS peas beans and barley grow...

This World Food Day  we welcome volunteers from Cargill  who come equipped with 60 - 10kg bags of oats from Horizon Milling to donate. This will provide enough for about 1500 people!

We've gotten used to seeing Cargill lugging compost through the Garden Patch , our urban agriculture initiative, as a team  and major sponsor for the past two years and we look forward to having their help in our warehouse and clothing depot today.

At the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre we have a vision of a food secure community where all people have access to safe, affordable, and nutritious food.

Oats are great for so many reasons and it's no wonder clients really appreciate receiving it in their food baskets. Oats are slow to digest which means you feel full for longer also making it a diabetes friendly food. It can be used to bulk up dishes, blended and used for flour and combined with fruit to increase calories and subsequently energy.

Milk for Children Program Receives $93,225 in funding - so far

Cameco 2014Milk for Children Program Receives $93,225 in Funding - so far

Milk is an essential part of a child's development. The Milk for Children Program at the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre ensures all children in need have access to fresh milk as part of their diet.

The goal of the program is to provide one litre of milk to all children age 17 and under and pregnant and nursing women every two weeks. The program gives families the support they need in times of crisis so they can focus on other issues.

An estimated 80,000 litres is required every year, which costs roughly $120,000.00. This year’s milk campaign – which runs April 1 to March 31 – has raised $93,225 in funding with six months remaining. Included in that total is a $30,000 grant from the United Way (an estimated 20,000 litres), while Cameco and its staff have just donated $28,000 (estimated 18,666 litres).

The Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre receives no core funding from any level of government and relies solely on the generosity of the public to operate. A gift to the Milk for Children Program goes directly toward the purchase of milk.
