Guest Blog: Chef Dale MacKay

"Food security in their local community might seem like a strange thing for a chef to be concerned with. While we do our best at Ayden Kitchen & Bar and Little Grouse on the Prairie to minimize food waste, the truth is that the restaurant industry can be pretty wasteful.

This is why we, as restaurateurs and chefs, have to do what we can to give back to the community. Supporting local doesn’t just mean local food providers, but also to build up a positive culture of food in the city – and working with the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre helps us to do that.

The programs and services offered by the food bank help to instill a positive and healthy view of food for those who are food insecure in Saskatoon. Programs like the Garden Patch create gorgeous green space in the city's downtown while educating the community about growing their own food. The garden's ability to provide fresh produce is so important to providing a source of high-quality, nutritious food to those who can’t always afford it.

Knowing what great work the Saskatoon Food Bank and Learning Centre does for the community in Saskatoon made choosing them to be the recipient of all proceeds from our upcoming Prairie Feast: Street Fair event a no brainer. We’re bringing a group of talented and local-minded chefs from around the country to cook for attendees, and we’re going to make sure to have lots of information for attendees about what they can do further to help create greater food security for everyone in Saskatoon.
